Funny old day started with rain again in Felixstowe with a few Felixstowe
sailors going to West Mersea but I thought the forecast a little marginal
and didn’t fancy a session sailing wind with tide so decided to give it a
miss, I think those who went had a good sail and even signed on for the
Around Mersea Race, an event I haven’t made up my mind yet? Again, with
low water in the middle of the day options were again limited, I could have
gone to Levington late after for a foil but in the end decided to repeat
what I did yesterday. The fact that they were cat racing off The Dip made
my mind up I was on the water around midday with the same kit as yesterday
with WNW wind marginally stronger. I started off heading out to the cat
finish line to see if Swainy was in the committee boat, sadly not but I
said hello as I sailed past:) I then carried on a nice beat down the coast
with some nice gusts coming through but in this direction it was pushing my
further offshore than yesterday. I decided to tack just short of the
shipping channel as a tug was heading out to get a large ship coming in. It
was a good runny/reach back despite the sea being particularly lumpy! I
even managed to get the rig right to the back but didn’t quite make 20
knots! I was going to sail behind the shingle bar to make the most of the
really flat water there but went ashore on kite beach and got small stones
in the dagger board and track so just sailed out to the nearest island to
clean it. I then had my snack and had a walk around the island while
watching the cat’s race. With the wind in this direction it didn’t look
very windy on the Bawdsey side so after a couple of runs out to sea I
decided to call it a day, that’s two sessions in a row without falling
in, am loving the longboard this year and have been on some great trips. It
is looking breezy Tues/Wed and might even get a trip to Point Clear, July
has been a good month with this being my 12th session with hopefully more
to come!
When I was packing up a lady who lives opposite The Dip cam come and asked
if we had noticed our beach hut has moved, I said was it kids messing about
and she said no it was the storm the other night! We might have to get the
council to re- position it as it is a bit on the heavy side!
